01 The brief

The goal: an electric go-kart built from scratch, designed, specified and sourced by me before a single part is bolted together.

02 What I did

  1. Designed the chassis and component layout in SketchUp.
  2. Built a complete bill of materials covering every part.
  3. Audited the BOM line by line against the actual shopping cart.
  4. Sourced drivetrain and battery components, iterating as options changed.

03 Engineering notes

BOM first

Writing the full bill of materials before buying shows the real cost and catches missing parts early. The cheapest place to fix a mistake is on paper.

Layout before parts

Placing the motor, battery and seat in the model first means every component has a home before it is ordered.
